A practical manual on dealing with physical diseases that commonly affect psychiatric patients. As a psychiatrist, you may be the only medically qualified person caring for your patient. So what do you do when your patient with bipolar disorder also has poorly controlled asthma? Someone taking antipsychotic medication complains of chest pain - what action do you need to take? Your elderly patient with dementia shows signs of respiratory distress following a fall - do you manage this yourself, or arrange a transfer to the emergency department? People with a mental illness or intellectual disability are especially vulnerable to physical illness but may not have easy access to a primary care doctor. All psychiatrists must be able to deal with medical emergencies and minor injuries, interpret basic medical investigations and recognise where and when to get help from a general practitioner or another specialist. Uniquely addressing this need, Essentials of Physical Health in Psychiatry is co-edited by a psychiatrist and a physician, and provides you with: basic information on common problems that may affect psychiatric patients; recommendations on regular medical review and disease screening; confidence to deal with common medical emergencies; and advice on when to refer to a specialist.

ST MEDICINE IN A CHANGING UNIVERSE AT THE THRESHOLD OF THE 21 CENTURY Hoyle Leigh, M. D. I Professor ofPsychiatry San Francisco, University ofCalifornia, and Fresno VAMedical Center INTRODUCTION During my lifetime, the universe has changed beyond recognition. The universe into 111 which I was born, in the first halfofthe 20 century, was still infinite, permanent, orderly, and tranquil --- a universe that worked like a masterfully constructed clock. Matter and energy followed Newton's lawsofconservation. Shortly after my birth, Hiroshima proved, with a big bang, that matter was no longer permanent, everything was relative. Einstein had also shown thateverything that happened was local, that is, there was an event horizon beyond which no information could reach as nothing can travel faster than light. When I was growing up, the moon was for lovers, and going there was an impossible dream. Cosmologically, the Big Bang theory that postulates that the universe was born out ofan explosion some 10-15 billion years ago from a primordial point won over steady state. Ithas been expanding ever since, although the ultimate fateofthe universe is still unknown whetherit will keep on expanding resulting in aperpetual stateofheat death, or will at some point startcontracting, resulting in a big crunch ofgravitational collapse ending in a single black hole out ofspace, time, and existence. Quantum theory has defeated even Einstein's genius and proven that God indeed plays dice.

Crisis

Unlike books focusing on a single crisis topic, Crisis helps recognize common signs of endangerment across a range of life challenges by showing the interconnections between various harmful events. Through media coverage of school shootings, suicides, domestic abuse, workplace violence, and more, we've become accustomed to hearing about violence and trauma-almost invariably followed by reports that show all of the warning signs that were missed. While it is impossible to predict when, where, and with whom a crisis will occur, we do have the means to be better equipped to intervene in stressful situations before they tip over into a crisis. Important preventative information is readily available, and this book better prepares us to take appropriate responsive action. Often a crisis is the result of a critical life event; whether or not a life-changing event turns into a crisis depends on the type, timing, and interpretation of the event, the person's life cycle development phase, history of healthy coping, and available timely support. In sum, Lee Ann Hoff illustrates how to recognize crisis as both danger and opportunity. The more we know about how to spot a potential crisis and what to do, the more likely distressed persons will get the help they need.
