What is home? What is loyalty? What is family? This book will make you question them all. "Beloved" is a unique memoir of war and triumph in the fictional city of Damas. Kirin is a young girl nearly orphaned and left in the care of her older brother, Emlyn. After a charismatic, tyrannical king takes control of Damas, capitalism and slavery are forced on its people. Kirin watches as her peers are sold into forced labor. Emlyn, fearing the same fate for his sister, enrolls her in the city's university for historians -- and begins to teach her to fight like a soldier, a path that ultimately leads them both into exile and war. As Kirin grows from a child of seven to a young woman of seventeen, her tale unfolds with shades of trauma, love, honor, and betrayal. She learns the value of family -- and just how crucial it is for historians to document the truth.

Burying the Beloved traces the relationship between the law and literature in Iran to reveal the profound ambiguities at the heart of Iranian ideas of modernity regarding women's rights and social status. The book reveals how novels mediate legal reforms and examines how authors have used realism to challenge and re-imagine notions of "the real." It examines seminal works that foreground acute anxieties about female subjectivity in an Iran negotiating its modernity from the Constitutional Revolution of 1905 up to and beyond the Islamic Revolution of 1979. By focusing on marriage as the central metaphor through which both law and fiction read gender, Motlagh critically engages and highlights the difficulties that arise as gender norms and laws change over time. She examines the recurrent foregrounding of marriage at five critical periods of legal reform, documenting how texts were understood both at first publication and as their importance changed over time.

Shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award "It came one morning with the milk, and it seemed - at first - almost as innocent..." When Roberta "Bertie" Lightfoot is struck down with polio, her world collapses. But Mama doesn't tolerate self-pity, and Bertie is nobody if not her mother's daughter - until she sets her heart on becoming an artist. Through drawing, the gifted and perceptive Bertie gives form and voice to the reality of the people and the world around her. While her father is happy enough to indulge Bertie's driving passion, her mother will not let art get in the way of the future she wishes for her only daughter. In 1955 the family moves to post-colonial Port Moresby, a sometimes violent frontier town, where Bertie, determined to be the master of her own life canvas, rebels against her mother's strict control. In this tropical landscape, Bertie thrives amid the lush pallette of colours and abundance, secretly learning the techniques of drawing and painting under the tutelage of her mother's arch rival. But Roberta is not the only one deceiving her family. As secrets come to light, the domestic varnish starts to crack, and jealousy and passion threaten to forever mar the relationship between mother and daughter. Tender and witty, The Beloved is a moving debut novel which paints a vivid portrait of both the beauty and the burden of unconditional love. Winner of the Queensland Premier's Literary Award for Best Emerging Queensland Author 2011 Winner of the Nita B Kibble Literary Awards for Women Writers Kibble Literary Award 2013 Commended for FAW National Literary Awards' Christina Stead Award 2012

"Romance may open the door to love, but it does not help us walk through it. Something else is needed. Something deeper. Something ultimately more real. Challenging times must be weathered. Love must be strengthened beyond neediness and self-interest. It must die a thousand deaths to learn to rise like the phoenix beyond adversity of any kind. Love is not a fragile, shiny thing, kept separate from the pain and misery of life. It is born of our willingness to learn from our mistakes and encounter the depth of our pain, as well as our partner's pain. That is the way it is. In time we learn that all pain is the same pain. And we have compassion for the other people who inadvertently step on our toes as they learn to find the inner rhythms of the dance. Like us, they will stumble and fall hundreds of times until that moment of profound aceptance when grace comes and the beloved takes their hand in the circle."
